Scope and requirement
Yumbah Aquaculture is one of Australia’s leading producers of premium seafood, with operations spanning aquaculture sites and manufacturing facilities across Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, and South Australia. With hundreds of employees working across 17 locations, Yumbah farms mussels, oysters, oyster spat, abalone, and kingfish using sustainable, environmentally responsible production systems that replicate natural processes.
The company continues to grow its footprint across diverse seascapes, while maintaining commitment to reducing pressure on wild catch and upholding the highest standards in food quality and environmental stewardship.
Challenges:
Before introducing Safety Champion, Yumbah faced several challenges common to multi‑site, compliance‑heavy industries:
Reactive instead of a proactive approach: A largely reactive approach to safety instead of proactive systems lead to oversight and a lack of consistency.
Risk management: Risk management processes lacked structure and visibility across multiple sites.
Aquaculture presented additional safety and compliance complexity due to:Food safety and quality requirements, AMSA marine safety obligations , External certifications (BAP, ASC) and operating across four different state safety jurisdictions.
Limited visibility across sites: With 17 locations, safety was inconsistent due to a lack of coverage.
Results
Yumbah Aquaculture is still in the implementation process with the Safety Champion and continues to make improvements.
Yumbah selected Safety Champion to streamline WHS management, increase transparency across sites, and embed a proactive, standardised approach to compliance.
Safety Champion helped Yumbah achieve measurable improvements across several key WHS areas. These included more accurate and accessible incident reporting, stronger risk management practices, and improved compliance tracking for training, certifications, and regulatory tasks.
Yumbah also experienced greater audit readiness, an uplift in safety culture, and improved productivity, particularly through more efficient reporting and investigation processes. The deployment of QR‑coding further streamlined workflows and reduced administrative burden.
