Scope and requirement
Lubambe Copper Mine, a prominent Zambian copper operation, joined Safety Champion in 2018 with the aim of enhancing its workplace safety practices. The mine safety team required a solution that could build and communicate Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) responsibilities to the workforce managers and supervisors, provide access to incident and hazard data for informed decision-making, and enable offline inspections in remote areas.
Challenges:
Communication of SHE Responsibilities: There was a pressing need to clearly define and disseminate safety responsibilities across all management levels.
Data-Driven Decision Making: The mine required a system that could consolidate incident and hazard information to support data-based safety decisions.
Operational Constraints: Given the remote nature of their operations, a platform capable of functioning offline was essential.
Transition from Paper-Based to Digital: The mine was reliant on a paper-based system, which was not only time-consuming but also prone to errors, impacting the overall efficiency of safety management.
Language Barriers: With a workforce that has diverse levels of literacy and diverse language needs, traditional text-heavy methods were inadequate for conveying critical safety information.

Results
The collaboration with Lubambe Copper Mine started with a comprehensive needs analysis and scoping process. We engaged closely with key stakeholders to understand their current paper-based system and identify critical gaps, including communication of safety responsibilities, real-time incident reporting, and the need for offline inspections. This allowed us to design an efficient process that meets their needs.
“From the outset, the team at Safety Champion understood our needs. They have been there with us every step of the way”

Approach to Success
Safety Champion Software addressed Lubambe Copper Mine challenges with a comprehensive digital platform that transformed the mine’s safety operations:
Centralised Communication
The platform clearly outlines and disseminates SHE responsibilities, ensuring that every manager and supervisor is on the same page.
Digital Transformation
By transitioning from a paper-based system to a digital one, Safety Champion streamlined the recording and reporting process, reducing errors and improving efficiency.
Incident and Hazard Management
Robust data capture and analysis features allow the mine to monitor safety incidents and hazards effectively, supporting timely, data-driven decisions.
Offline Capability
Recognising the remote working conditions, the system supports offline inspections, ensuring continuity in safety assessments regardless of connectivity.
Enhanced Accessibility
With built-in language translation and intuitive design, the platform overcomes literacy barriers, ensuring that all workers can understand and adhere to safety protocols, regardless of their language or reading proficiency.
